Mark Twain National Forrest Trail System – Chadwick, MO
First Impressions: The highway into Mark Twain OHV area was like a roller coaster, so I knew I was in for some hill climbs.
Property Type: Mark Twain OHV area is managed by the United States Forest Service, so permits are required.
Time There: Thursday, July 4th – 8th
Location: Mark Twain National Forrest OHV area is located just south of Chadwick, Missouri.
Elevation: 1,200 feet
Inside Chadwick OHV
Trail Type: Chadwick offers two-track trails to accommodate dirt bikes, ATV and 50″ SxS. The narrow trails and dense vegetation don’t allow for fast riding unless you know what’s around the bend. As of January 1st, 2018, the Mark Twain National Forest started allowing 50″ SXSs
Terrain: The terrain consists of rocks, gravel, granite, and some dirt. The lack of dirt makes wet trails more fun to rid because you don’t have to deal with ruts! And nothing is flat here, so the water doesn’t stay for long.
Type of Riding: I wouldn’t take kids or beginners to Chadwick. Yes, there are some wide sections and a service road, but the trails turn from easy to expert very fast.
Outstanding Features: You will not get bored in Chadwick!
Weather: I was riding during the 4th of July weekend, so it was hot and humid, but the shade and breeze kept it manageable.
Good For A Fun Weekend!
Facilities: Vault toilets at the day-use area, and a shower house at Cobb Ridge Campground.
Camping: Yes
Length of Stay: 3 days
Other Riders: I didn’t see many other riders on the trails, the one I did see was clearly better than me because he rode a GasGas and couldn’t be bothered to make room on the trail.
Final Thoughts: Chadwick is a great weekend trip to the woods! I would definitely recommend making this a yearly trip.
